Our unique Heavy oil business unit continues to develop what may be the most exciting opportunity in the oil industry today. Petrobank’s patented THAI™ process is a step-change in the recovery of heavy oil and bitumen resources worldwide. While there are other technologies in use, the THAI™ process has many advantages ranging from speed of project execution, lower capital and operating costs, lower environmental impact, and higher resource recovery potential. THAI™ is the most sustainable of currently available technologies.

In just over a year, Petrobank constructed a demonstration project and commenced production using the THAI™ process. The WHITESANDS project, operated by Petrobank through its wholly owned subsidiary, WHITESANDS Insitu ltd., is sited on a portion of our 62 sections of oil sands leases in the heart of Alberta’s in-situ oil sands fairway. With the successful start-up of the WHITESANDS project, the benchmarks established for proving the THAI™ technology have all been met or exceeded and, while the demonstration project is continuing, Petrobank is moving forward with expansion plans and further commercial applications.
